BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior forward Ella Ellis was named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Patriot League Men's Basketball Team on Wednesday at the conference's annual media day gathering. Ellis, a first-team All-Patriot League selection last season, is the first Black Knight to be named to the preseason all-conference team since Jarell Brown in 2007-08.
The Houston native led the Black Knights and ranked third in the league in scoring last season at 17.5 points per game. He was one of only two players in the conference to average at least 15 points, four rebounds, and two assists per game.
Ellis begins his senior season ranked 26th all-time at West Point with 1,037 points. He is also among the Black Knights' career leaders in three-pointers (8th, 121) and three-point field goal percentage (15h, .358). Ellis is the first Army player since Randy Cozzens (1982-85) to have at least two seasons of 400 points, 100 rebounds and 50 assists.
Ellis was the only player among the five preseason all-league choices to be from a school outside of Lehigh and Bucknell, the two favorites to capture the 2013 Patriot League championship. The Black Knights finish sixth in the preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors. American was chosen third, followed by tie for fourth place between Holy Cross and Lafayette. Colgate and Navy rounded out the predicted order of finish.
Lehigh's C.J. McCollum and Gabe Knutson, along with Bucknell's Mike Muscala and Cameron Ayers joined Ellis on the preseason all-league team. McCollum, last season's Patriot League Player of the Year, was chosen to repeat the honor.
Army opens its season on Nov. 10 against service academy rival Air Force in the All-Military Classic in Charleston, S.C. The Black Knights open the home portion of their schedule on Nov. 16 against Binghamton.
