2012-13 Army Men's Basketball Schedule
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Contests with rivals Navy, Air Force and Marist, along with trips to Penn State and Texas A&M highlight the 2012-13 Army men's basketball schedule announced on Wednesday. The Black Knights are scheduled to play 29 games, including 15 non-conference outings and 14 Patriot League matchups.
For the second straight season, the Black Knights will begin their season by participating in the All-Military Classic. This year's edition will be contested in Charleston, S.C. and hosted by The Citadel.
Army begins tournament play on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. against service-academy rival Air Force. VMI and the host Bulldogs will square off at 4 p.m. The consolation game is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., while the championship contest will follow at 4 p.m.
The Black Knights make their home debut on Friday, Nov. 16 against Binghamton. It is the first of five non-conference match ups set for Christl Arena. Local rival Marist comes to West Pont on Dec. 4, followed by games versus Maine (Dec. 14), Rosemont College (Dec. 22) and Columbia (Jan. 5).
After the season-opening tournament, Army will play eight non-league games on the road. Following the home opener, the Black Knights have a three-game road swing at St. Francis (N.Y.) (Nov. 20), Yale (Nov. 24) and Bryant (Dec. 1). Army will face Big Ten foe Penn State on Dec. 8 before making the short trip to NJIT on Dec. 11. Following a brief holiday break, the Black Knights will take a two-game trip to Texas, facing Texas A&M on Dec. 29 and Houston Baptist on Dec. 31. Army closes out the non-conference schedule at Dartmouth on Jan. 8.
Army went 4-5 last season against teams on the 2012-13 schedule, including wins over Bryant, Binghamton, Dartmouth and St. Francis (N.Y.).
The Patriot League schedule begins at Bucknell on Jan. 12. The Black Knights will play three games on the road during the first time through the conference, and face four road games in their last seven to end the regular season. Army plays at Colgate (Jan. 23), Holy Cross (Jan. 30), Lafayette (Feb. 13), Navy (Feb. 16), American (Feb. 23) and Lehigh (Mar. 2). Army's 2013 conference home schedule includes tilts with Lafayette (Jan. 16), Navy (Jan. 20), American (Jan. 26), Lehigh (Feb. 3), Bucknell (Feb. 9), Colgate (Feb. 20) and Holy Cross (Feb. 27).
The Patriot League Tournament begins on Mar. 6 at the home sites of the top four seeds. The semifinals are scheduled for Mar. 9 with the championship game set for Mar. 13.
Army returns four starters and seven of its top eight scorers from last season, including first-team All-Patriot League selection Ella Ellis. Ellis averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game last season. Josh Herbeck, who scored 10.3 points per game as sophomore, also returns to the lineup. Herbeck has made more three-pointers than any other Army player through their first two seasons. Patriot League All-Rookie Team pick Maxwell Lenox leads a group of sophomores who were vital contributors a year ago.
