WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior F Ella Ellis is this week's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after his performances in the Black Knights' two games last week. It is the second time this season the Houston native has earned the award.
Ellis averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in helping Army split a pair of Patriot League men's basketball games. He posted his first double-double of the season with a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds versus Lafayette and then scored 17 points in the Black Knights' double-overtime win over Navy.
Ellis also had a good statistical week on the defensive end, averaging 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in the two games. His blocked shot versus Navy came on the first possession of the second overtime and led to Army's go-ahead three-pointer. Ellis also assisted on the Josh Herbeck's triple.
Army's leading scorer at 18.3 points per game, Ellis has scored in double figures in 27 consecutive games. It is the longest streak by an Army player since all-time leading scorer Kevin Houston had a run of 57 straight games from 1984-87. Since assists became an official statistics in 1981-82, Ellis is only the second Army player to post two seasons with at least 400 points, 100 rebounds and 50 assists. Army Athletics Hall of Famer Randy Cozzens did it three times in the early 1980s. Ellis has accumulated 458 points, 122 rebounds and 55 assists in 2011-12.
The Black Knights will go for their second straight win on Wednesday at Colgate. Tip-off at Cotterell Court is set for 7 p.m. Army won the first meeting between the two teams at Christl Arena, hitting a school-record 16 three-pointers.
