WEST POINT, N.Y. - Head baseball coach Matt Reid announced the addition of Tyler Cannon as an assistant coach on Thursday. Cannon comes to West Point after serving as a student assistant coach at the University of Virginia, where he helped lead his alma mater to a national runner-up finish at the College World Series in 2014.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Tyler to the Army baseball family," Reid stated. "His experience as a player at the collegiate and professional levels will be a tremendous asset for our program. Tyler understands the great tradition here at West Point and will positively impact our team offensively and defensively."

The Cavaliers posted a 53-16 overall record in 2014, including a 22-8 mark in ACC play and a 34-4 home record. Virginia hosted the Charlottesville Regional and the Charlottesville Super Regional prior to advancing to Omaha for the College World Series.

A four-year letterwinner for Virginia during his playing career, Cannon was a starter on four NCAA tournament teams and was the shortstop on Virginia's 2009 team which won the ACC championship and advanced to the program's first College World Series. Cannon was named to the 2009 All-College World Series Team.

Cannon played in a school-record 244 games (238 starts) during his time in Charlottesville. He was a .303 career hitter with 276 hits, which is tied for second most in program history. He holds school records with 62 doubles and 910 at bats and also ranks third in program history in triples (12) and runs (185), fifth in total bases (380) and eighth in stolen bases (49) and walks (107).

Cannon was selected in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft on two occasions. He was a 41st-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, then returned to Virginia for his senior year and was chosen in the 12th round of the 2010 draft by the Cleveland Indians. He played three seasons in the Indians' farm system, reaching the double-A level in 2011, and retired prior to the 2013 season.

Cannon resides in Monroe, N.Y. with his wife Allison and their daughter Brooklyn.
