Senior catcher J.T. Watkins will take Army baseball fans on a journey throughout the 2012 season through his blog Behind the Plate. Watkins, who is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this year, is a two-time All-Patriot League selection. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.
After an exciting week for all of West Point with graduation and the Patriot League Championship, the team is ready to get back after it again. This is a great time of year for all the guys. School is out and our sole focus is on winning baseball games and playing the game the right way.
We certainly had some outstanding performances from guys like Zach Price, Logan Lee and Gunnar Carroll during the Patriot League Championship Series. Zach set records on the basepaths and Logan really set the tone for the pitching staff. Gunnar came in and pitched great in those last three innings. Holy Cross played well throughout the series, and they deserve a lot of credit.
Finding out where we would go for the NCAA Regionals was exciting. There were a lot of guesses floating around, but I don't think many guys thought we'd end up in the Charlottesville Regional. However, our team has a strong Virginia connection and we're anxious to compete again. We understand what type of environment it will be with many fans and a lot of noise to go along with the game itself, and we've prepared ourselves accordingly. We don't expect to be perfect, but we do expect to play the way we've been playing all year long.
We arrived in Charlottesville this afternoon after a long bus ride (just under 400 miles). We have one more day of practice on Thursday before taking on Virginia on Friday night.
