WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army baseball team parlayed a perfect 5-0 record last week into weekly individual honors. Sophomore pitcher Brock Davidson was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and the Army Athletics Association Co-Athlete of the Week, while junior shortstop Alex Jensen picked up Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Junior Alex Robinett joined Davidson as a recipient of the AAA weekly award.
Davidson capped Army’s four-game sweep over Patriot League rival Holy Cross by tossing a complete-game, three-hit shutout. The Houston native struck out seven without issuing a walk. He faced just three batters over the minimum, retiring 16 of the last 17 hitters he faced. He did not allow a runner to reach third base during the final eight innings and set down the side in order six times.
Jensen batted .375 (6-for-16) in Army’s five games. In the four-game sweep of the Crusaders, the Charlotte, N.C., native went 6-for-13 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. He drove in three runs in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep, including two in 3-0, game two victory. He had a hit in all four games and handled 20 chances in the field without an error.
Robinett threw Army’s first nine-inning shutout of the season, blanking the Crusaders 1-0 on Saturday. He struck out seven hitters, walking just two. A native of Bend, Ore., Robinett was able to strand three runners in scoring position during the first three innings. He settled into a rhythm, giving up only four runs in six frames. Holy Cross put the tying runner in scoring position in the ninth, but Robinett struck out the final batter looking.
The Black Knights will take on Marist on Wednesday, April 23 in the Hudson Valley Baseball Classic at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Following the mid-week tilt, Army heads to Annapolis next weekend to end the conference regular season versus Navy. In addition to Patriot League seeding, the series will determine who wins the overall Star Series for the 2013-14 season. Both the Black Knights and Mids have won 11 stars.
