WEST POINT, N.Y. - J.T. Watkins picked up another weekly award on Monday afternoon as the Black Knights' senior catcher was selected as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. Watkins was tabbed Patriot League Player of the Week earlier in the day.
One of the Black Knights captains, Watkins batted .538 (7-for-13) with two home runs, two doubles, seven RBI and five runs scored as Army swept a three-game series from Sacred Heart last weekend. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native finished the weekend with a staggering slugging percentage of 1.154.
Watkins exploded offensively in Army's 6-2 victory over Sacred Heart in the series opener, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. His three-run homer in the fifth inning extended the Black Knights' lead to 6-0 and they never looked back en route to the win. He established career highs in home runs, RBI and total bases (nine) in the contest.
An all-league honoree as a junior last season, Watkins went 1-for-4 with two runs scored in Army's 15-6 triumph in the middle game of the three-game set. He continued his torrid hitting in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored as the Black Knights rallied for a 5-2 win. His two-run double during Army's three-run fifth inning gave Army a 4-2 edge, and he scored an insurance run in the eighth when he doubled leading off the frame and scored on Harold Earls' two-out base hit.
Watkins, who has been on a tear of late, is batting .354 for the season. He leads Army in several of the major offensive power categories, topping the Black Knights with two home runs, four doubles, 13 RBI, 27 total bases and a .563 slugging percentage.
Army (8-4) is off to its best 12-game start since the 1989 squad also began the year 8-4. The Black Knights will return to action on Tuesday, March 13, when they travel to Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla., to face Nebraska-Omaha. First pitch for the contest is set for 6 p.m.
