WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army baseball team returns to action this weekend (March 1-3) when the Black Knights travel to Lynchburg, Va., to compete at the Liberty Invitational Tournament hosted by Liberty University.

Army begins the three-day event with a game against the host Flames on Friday at 3 p.m. The Black Knights are scheduled to face Siena on Saturday at 12 p.m., before closing out the weekend with a second game against Liberty on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Those fans unable to make the trip to Lynchburg will be able to follow along with live stats for each of Army's games via GameTracker by logging onto the Black Knights' official athletics website and navigating to the baseball schedule page. Video streamed broadcasts of the Army-Liberty contests will be available via the Big South Network for $4.95. Twitter updates will also be offered via the official handle of the Black Knights (@Army_Baseball).

Army (0-4) dropped a pair of games at the Coca-Cola Classic last weekend, falling to Eastern Kentucky (8-6) and Delaware State (6-5 in 10 innings). Inclement weather has played a role in the Black Knights' first two weekends of competition. Army has only played four of six scheduled games so far this year, though the weather in Lynchburg for this weekend should allow for all three contests to be played.

Junior 1B Patrick Mescher has led the Army offense in the early going with a .417 batting average and three runs batted in. Junior OF Jon Crucitti is batting .400 with a team-best .600 on-base percentage. Freshman OF Jacob Page is among the Black Knights' leaders with three runs scored and three RBI.

Sophomore RHP Alex Robinett (0-0, 4.22 ERA) is tied for the team lead with three strikeouts in a team-best 10.2 innings pitched.

Liberty (5-2) is coming off a 14-4 victory at East Carolina on Wednesday. The Flames began the season by playing three one-run games against fifth-ranked South Carolina. LU took the final game of the three-game set versus the Gamecocks, posting a 3-2 victory in Columbia, S.C. Last weekend, Liberty swept a three-game series from Penn State. The Flames are led by a strong pitching staff, which boasts a 2.81 team earned run average. The team also shows a .282 batting average as a unit.

Senior C Trey Wimmer leads the Flames in batting average (.476), slugging percentage (1.000), doubles (four), triples (two), and runs batted in (10). Junior OF Ryan Cordell is batting .400 with a .667 slugging percentage, three doubles and 10 RBI. Wimmer and Cordell both hit grand slams in Wednesday's lopsided win at East Carolina.

Sophomore RHP Carson Herndon (0-1, 1.74 ERA) is penciled in to start Friday's game against Army. Herndon, who is tied for the team lead with six strikeouts, paces the club with 10.1 innings pitched. Senior RHP Brooks Roy (1-0, 0.90) and junior RHP Trey Lambert (1-0, 3.68) also figure to earn starts this weekend.

Siena (1-5) opened the season by dropping two of three games at Central Florida (Feb. 15-17). The Saints were then swept in a three-game series at William & Mary last weekend (Feb. 23-24). Siena is hitting just .229 as a team, while their team earned run average is 6.61

Senior OF Mike Fish leads the Siena offense with a .348 batting average, while Senior C Larry Balkwill paces the Saints with eight RBI. Sophomore LHP Matt Gage (1-1) has posted the best numbers among Siena's starting pitchers, having forged a 6.00 ERA through a team-best 9.0 innings. Sophomore RHP Ed Lewicki, who has appeared twice out of the bullpen, shows a stingy 1.69 ERA and is tied for the team lead with six strikeouts.

Army is 1-4 all-time versus Liberty, though the two programs have not met since the Flames swept a three-game series from the Black Knights in 2008. Army shows an 11-4 all-time record against Siena following the Black Knights 14-1 victory last season in Loudonville, N.Y.

Following this weekend's action, Army will travel to Florida for its annual spring break trip. The Black Knights open their seven-game schedule in the Sunshine State by facing Ivy League foe Yale in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 9.
