OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Army senior RHP Chris Rowley has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced on Wednesday. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Rowley, who was named the 2012 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year following a record-breaking junior campaign, is the third Army baseball player to be considered for this prestigious award, joining former Black Knight standouts Ben Koenigsfeld (2011) and Zach Price (2012). Price was the first Army player to be named a finalist for the award last season and went on to earn Senior CLASS Award All-America honors.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA College World Series® in Omaha June 15-26.

A six-time All-American, Rowley was named to the All-Patriot League first team in 2012 after re-writing the Black Knights' record books last year. He went 11-1 with a microscopic 2.40 earned run average last season en route to earning three All-America certificates. He was honored by the NCBWA (second team), Collegiate Baseball newspaper (second team) and CollegiateBaseballInsider.com (honorable mention).

The Duluth, Ga., native established Academy single-season records for wins (11), shutouts (five), consecutive shutouts (four), consecutive scoreless innings (29), consecutive innings without giving up an earned run (29), innings pitched (97.1) and games started (15).

Rowley was named first-team All-Northeast Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and earned second-team ECAC All-Star plaudits last spring. He finished his incredible junior season ranked ninth in the nation with 11 victories, third in WHIP (0.88), ninth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.92) and 10th with six complete games. The hard-throwing righty struck out 80 batters and walked only 22 in 97.1 innings pitched over 15 starts. He yielded just 13 extra base hits, and opponents batted a mere .190 against him.

Rowley, who collected three Preseason All-America certificates prior to the 2013 campaign, was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week a record-tying four times last season.

The 2013 candidate class includes 15 candidates who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Five were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American team and four were All-Americans.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Rowley and the Black Knights return to action this weekend (March 1-3) when the Black Knights travel to Lynchburg, Va., to participate in the Liberty Invitational Tournament.
