Army senior catcher Andrew Johnson will author a blog entitled "Catcher's Corner" throughout the 2013 season. Johnson, a two-year letter winner, is serving as one of the Black Knights' co-captains this spring. Check back weekly to follow along with the inside happenings of the Army baseball team.

The snow turned to rain and again kept us from playing all three games last weekend. Finally on Sunday we got the weather we had hoped for. Temperatures were in the 60s and it was sunny; beautiful baseball weather. As the weather improved so did our play. Delaware State is a solid team that competes at the national level. They do the little things well; they bunt, play good defense, run and are very well coached. We battled all day and our offense came to life, but in the end we were not able to earn the victory. The team showed signs of becoming the high-tempo, electric team we want to be and know we can be. That is something we will have to grasp onto moving along. It is an identity that we have held onto in previous seasons, and has pushed us to reach our goals.

Patrick Mescher and Jon Crucitti served as catalysts for our offense last weekend. Both guys are strong leaders in the infield and outfield, respectively. These will be two guys to watch out for all season long as I expect them to continue their success and inspire the rest of the team. Daniel Cortes and Mescher both saw early struggles, but both have turned that around with strong performances as of late. This toughness and ability to roll with the punches and come out on top has grabbed the attention of everyone in the locker room. Freshman Jacob Page is beginning to harness the raw strength and power he has and gave us our first extra base hit of the season last Sunday. Garrison Franklin continues to pitch competitively and has put his name in contention to see more innings as a freshman. We will need more young guys like Jacob and Garrison to step up this year if we want to lengthen our lineup and pitching staff. Depth and consistency will be keys moving forward.

As soon as our schedule was posted earlier this year, Liberty was a team we took note of immediately. They are a strong team and will be one of the better clubs we face this year. We showed last week we can battle with solid teams like Delaware State. Now it's time to take the next step and win some games. We are focusing this week on the little things we control mentally. The mental game is important for our younger team in order to slow down the game and rely on instincts and our years of experience growing up.

There is no rain in the forecast for this upcoming weekend in Virginia, but I don't want to jinx anything. Hopefully the more innings we get in the more well progress as a team.

Be Big Time,

AJ
