Army Will Face UMass At USA Baseball Complex

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army baseball team will make its second trip south, this time to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., to face the University of Massachusetts.

Army, 1-2 after a three-game series at William & Mary last weekend, will play UMass twice on Saturday beginning at noon and once on Sunday with another 12 p.m. start.

UMass, making its 2014 debut, was 22-22 last season, including a 14-10 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Army racked up 26 hits and scored 13 runs in its season-opening series at William & Mary. Mark McCants collected five hits over the weekend while Jacob Page doubled and singled three times. Jon Crucitti also had four base hits while Grant Van Orden and Patrick Mescher collected three. Harold Earls scored five runs in the series and Crucitti, twice.

Nick Dignacco was the winning pitcher in Army's 6-4 victory, the first for interim head coach Matt Reid. Dignacco scattered five hits and allowed just one run in five innings of work that featured four strikeouts. Alex Robinett picked up the save, allowed one run and two hits in 4.0 innings of work. In all, 12 pitchers threw against William & Mary.

ABOUT UMASS: The Minutemen return 25 players from last year's squad, including senior third baseman Nik Campero who hit .305 last season with 50 hits and 20 RBI. Junior right-hander Andrew Grant is the squad's top returning pitcher after posting 58 strikeouts in 63.2 innings of work.

Head coach Mike Stone, a 1982 UMass graduate, is in his 27th season as head coach.

UP NEXT: After its series with UMass, Army will travel to Buies Creek, N.C., for games Feb. 28-March 2. Army will play a split doubleheader with Towson and host Campbell on Friday and then play a single game against Campbell on Saturday and a lone contest against Towson on Sunday. Friday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. with Saturday's contest is set for 3 p.m. Sunday's game will begin at 11 a.m.

AROUND THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: Army, Bucknell and Navy all began the 2014 season last weekend. The Bison dropped three contests at South Carolina (21-2, 21-0, 17-4) while Navy went 1-2 at Florida A&M with a 2-0 win followed by 3-2 and 7-3 losses.

Lehigh (Mount St. Mary's, Farleigh Dickinson), Lafayette (VMI), Holy Cross (Mississippi State), Navy (Air Force), Bucknell (Delaware State, Iona) are all scheduled to play this weekend.
