BRONX, N.Y. Senior Jonathan Anderson earned All-Region recognition with a 14th place finish in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Columbia in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday morning. The Army men placed 13th in the 39 team field.
Anderson completed the rain soaked 10K course in 32:14.0, but the Patriot League Champion came up just short of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. Anderson would have needed to have placed eighth to finish as one of the top four individuals not on one of the top two teams.
“Jon ran a good race,” said head coach Troy Engle. “Jon ran a smart race but just came up a little bit short. He finished strong as he moved up in the field in the last third of the race.”
Senior captain Andrew Catalano (33:19.9) was the second Army finisher, crossing the line in 52nd out of 239 runners. He was followed by senior Justin Messenger (75th, 33:57.5), junior Greg Griffith (34:05.1) and junior Kirk Chitwood (137th, 35:21.2) to complete the scoring group while junior Zach Reiter finished in 179th in 36:09.0.
Heavy rains created a muddy course that slowed the field.
“The course was just a quagmire,” said Engle. “It was a mudder’s course and was not going to lend itself to any fast times.”
No. 8 Iona repeated as the Regional champions and will advance to the NCAA National Championships along with second place Providence. Iona’s Mohamed Khadraoui placed first in 31:11.6.
The Black Knights will return to Van Cortlandt Park to conclude the 2008 cross country season on Saturday, Nov. 22 with the IC4A Championships.
