CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Success by Army cross country runners transcended into the classroom on Wednesday afternoon as three Black Knights were named to the Academic All-Patriot League Teams, as announced by the conference office. Two men and one woman from Army were named to their respective squads as the Black Knights collected their highest total of certificates in the history of the honor.

Sophomore Lisa Junta was the lone Army female selected, while juniors Ricardo Galindo and Kendall Ward earned spots on the men’s team.

Now in its third year, the Academic All-Patriot League Teams are voted on by schools’ cross country sports information contacts and recognizes two seven-member teams as well as a male and female Scholar-Athlete. Student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve with at least a 3.2 grade point average. Freshmen are not eligible.

In her first semester of being eligible for the recognition, Junta earned one of seven spots on the Academic All-Patriot League squad after boasting a 4.074 grade point average and having a standout sophomore cross country season. The Life Science major earned Army’s top finish in all six meets this season, including the best finish by a Black Knight since 1998 at the Patriot League Championships. Junta’s third-place finish at the conference meet earned her first-team all-league honors.

Galindo led the Black Knights in all six meets this season, including a ninth-place time at the league championships. The second-team all-conference choice has earned a 3.612 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in Life Science. Galindo’s junior season has been a decorated one, becoming the first Black Knight since 2008 to win the individual title at the Army-Navy Star Meet as well as be named AAA Athlete of the Week and Patriot League Men’s Runner of the Week.

Ward was also named to the All-Patriot League Second Team following a 14th-place finish at the conference meet. The junior Economics major boasts a 3.964 GPA and has come on strong in 2012 after missing the first two meets of the season due to injury.

Navy’s Brigid Byrne and Chris Galvin were named the Cross Country Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Through three seasons of Academic All-Patriot League Teams, Army has earned six certificates. Brian Morenus was named to the inaugural team in 2010, while Chelsea Prahl and Mike Mitchell were recognized in 2011.
