WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Postseason begins on Saturday for Army cross country as the Black Knights will travel to Lafayette for the 2013 Patriot League Championships. The men’s 8,000-meter race will kick off the day at 11 a.m., followed by the women’s 6K at noon. Both races will be contended at the Metzgar Athletic Complex in Easton, Pa.

Army will be vying for a spot atop the newly expanded 10-team field as Loyola and Boston University were added to the Patriot League lineup over the summer. The Black Knights last brought home a league title in 2008 when the men’s squad shared the crown with Navy, while the Army women claimed the 2004 team championship. In the preseason poll, the Army men were picked fifth while the women landed third. Navy was tabbed to sweep the titles.

The Black Knights last competed on Oct. 18 against the rival Midshipmen in the annual Star Meet. Led by senior Ricardo Galindo’s second consecutive individual title, the Army men defeated Navy, 26-29, while the Black Knight women were edged by a score of 24-31 at the West Point Golf Course.

The Army men have beaten Navy five times since the Patriot League began sponsoring an annual cross country championship in 1993, and in four of those five seasons also claimed the conference title.

Army combined for a total of five All-Patriot League certificates at the 2012 conference meet as the men placed fourth and the women finished third. The Black Knight women will be without all three all-league honorees from a year ago, while the men return both All-Patriot League second-team members in Galindo and senior Kendall Ward.

Ward and Galindo have led Army in all five meets this season, with Ward earning Army’s top time in three races and Galindo claiming No. 1 honors in two. The Black Knight women have a similar one-two punch in sophomore Madison Hill and senior Katie Collins. Competing in her first season for Army, Hill has earned the team’s top time in three races this season, including a runner-up performance against Navy. Collins, who missed last season, was the first Army runner to cross the line in two meets in 2013.

Following Saturday’s competition, postseason will continue for Army on Nov. 15 at the NCAA Regionals at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
