WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior cross country standout Ricardo Galindo garnered Patriot League Runner of the Week and Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week accolades after winning the individual title at the Army-Navy Star Meet in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday. Galindo bested a field of 24 to capture first place against the reigning Patriot League champions in the Black Knights’ 20-43 dual meet loss.

Galindo finished Navy’s 8K course in 24:38.56, edging out the Midshipmen’s John Sweeney by a shade over two seconds. The Army junior is the first Black Knight to capture first place overall since 2008, when Jon Anderson led the squad to their most recent Star Meet team victory. Galindo’s finish also marks the first time since 2007 when the first-place time did not belong to a member of the team which won the meet. He has earned Army’s top time in all five races this season.

“Ricky ran as solid and as brilliant a race as he could have and honestly the kind of race we expected him to run based on the way he’s performed over the past year,” said Army head coach Troy Engle. “He’s developed into a very seasoned, cagey competitor. He sat on the Navy guys and then at the four-mile mark made his move, he busted it up in the last kilometer. He’s got the ability to do that in every race.

“He and I had a conversation the day before about what his role needed to be in order for us to be competitive as a team, and just as he did a season ago against Navy, when the chips are down, Ricky knows what he’s got to do,” continued Engle. “His role in the team’s outcome was to be out or near the front. He never doubted he could do it and we as a coaching staff never doubted it. He really embodies that warrior ethos that runs through the veins of every West Point cadet.”

Galindo is the second cross country runner of the year to be tabbed AAA Athlete of the Week, following Lisa Junta on Sept. 17. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native is the first men’s runner to be honored since Oct. 20, 2008, when Jon Anderson was recognized following his first-place finish against the Midshipmen. Anderson also collected men’s Patriot League Runner of the Week following that meet and was Army’s most recent until Galindo’s certificate on Monday.

The Army-Navy meet marks the final regular-season competition for the Black Knights. Army will have two weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championships, which will be hosted by Colgate on Oct. 27.
