WEST POINT, N.Y. – The steady climb towards the peak of the cross country schedule begins this weekend when Army travels to the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh on Friday. The competition will pit the Black Knights against five fellow Patriot League squads in the women’s 6K race and four conference foes in the men’s 8K. The men’s race leads off the day at 11 a.m., and will be followed by the women’s at 11:45.

The Black Knights enjoyed their first bye week of the season last week as they last competed on Sept.15 at the Iona Meet of Champions. The Army women took home the team title for the first time in program history, besting a field of 12 teams, while the men placed fifth of 14 squads.

Sophomore Lisa Junta led the Black Knights for the third consecutive meet, placing fourth overall and earning Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors for her efforts. Junior Liz O’Donnell (eighth) and freshman Lindsay Gabow (10th) rounded out Army’s top three. O’Donnell and Gabow have been among the top-three finishers for the Black Knights through the first three meets of 2012.

The top three on the men’s side have been equally as consistent as junior Ricardo Galindo was the No. 1 finisher for the Black Knights and was followed by senior James Hodgen in the No. 2 spot for the third consecutive meet. Senior Mark Castelli was the third Army runner to cross the line, achieving that feat for the second time in 2012.

At last season’s Paul Short Run, the Army women placed 22nd of 45 teams, while the men finished 24th of 45. The women’s top finish at the annual meet came in 1985 when they placed fifth overall, while the men have won the team title on three occasions, most recently in 2006.

Fellow Patriot League schools slated to compete at Paul Short are Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy (women only).

Following Friday’s meet, the Black Knights will have two weeks to prepare for their lone dual meet of the season – the Army-Navy Star Meet. This season’s annual academy showdown will take place in Annapolis, Md., on Oct. 13.
