BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Just weeks removed from completing their first year at West Point, Army track standouts Jennifer Comfort and Lisa Junta will continue their seasons at the U.S.A. Junior Outdoor Championships at Indiana University. Competitors are between the ages of 14 of 20, are U.S. citizens and have met qualifying standards.
Comfort qualified in the 800-meter run, while Junta earned an invite in the 5,000 meters. The first round of the 800m is scheduled for Friday, June 15, at 4:55 p.m.; finals (top eight) will follow on Saturday at 6:20 p.m. The women’s 5,000m is a finals-only event and will kick off on Saturday at 8 p.m. Through Thursday afternoon, 22 women have declared in the 800m and 17 in the 5,0000m.
Rising senior McKenzie Majchrzak was the most recent Black Knight to qualify for the Junior Nationals (2010). Majchrzak, who missed the competition due to a 24-hour illness, earned a bid in the high jump. Javelin thrower Kevin Kumlien competed in 2006, placing 13th.
The meet will serve as a qualifier for this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships. Top performers will be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain, July 10-15. For a full schedule of events and more information about the Junior Nationals, click here.
