WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Reigning indoor Patriot League Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year Lisa Junta collected her second major academic award of the season after being voted to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team on Thursday. First-team honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected in June.

Junta joins Tom Wagner (USMA ’12) as Army’s second consecutive All-Districut First-Team selection after Wagner was recognized following the 2012 track season.

Junta won the 5,000-meter run at the Patriot League Indoor Championships in February with the second-fastest time in Army history before smashing the 27-year old Academy record in the 3,000 meters the following day en route to the gold medal. Following the championships, Junta garnered Track Performer of the Meet honors, becoming just the second Black Knight in program history to earn the recognition. She then concluded the indoor campaign by claiming her second career ECAC title by recording a program-record finish in the 5,000 meters.

In the classroom, the Life Science major carries a 4.12 cumulative grade point average and has received a number of recognitions including being named to the Dean’s List, the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and Academic All-League.

The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® Women’s Track / Cross Country Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.   Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

The Academic All-District ® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.  This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division  (Division I) and a College Division  (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
