WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three members of the Army track and field team have accepted invitations to the NCAA Championship East Preliminary Round after earning qualifying marks this outdoor season. To qualify, athletes must rank in the top 48 in their event in their respective regions.

Freshman Lisa Junta, sophomore Jessica Waggoner and junior Nick Snoad all met the criteria. The University of North Florida in Jacksonville will serve as the host for the East Preliminary May 24-26.

Five Black Knights in total earned finishes that ranked in the top 48 in the East, but with the preliminary rounds scheduled for the same weekend as West Point’s graduation, seniors Tom Wagner and Fred Beebe opted to not compete.

Junta edged her way into the NCAAs this past weekend at the ECAC Championship. The freshman won the 10,000-meter run with the region’s 48th-best time of the season, becoming Army’s first ever ECAC individual champion on the track. The Springfield, Va., native, who won the Patriot League 10K title as well, snapped the tape at the ECACs with a time of 35:17.90, which ranks third all-time at the Academy.

Waggoner broke the 10-year old Academy discus record on May 7 to punch her ticket to the NCAA Preliminaries. Competing at the Army Strong Meet, Waggoner recorded a toss of 50.74 meters to rank 22nd on the East’s descending order list.

Snoad recorded the seventh-best hammer throw mark in Academy history at the Penn Relays on April 28. The toss of 60.66m is the best by a Black Knight since 2004 and ranks 23rd on the East Region’s list.

All three Black Knights will be making their first appearances on the national stage. Junta will lead off the events on Thursday, May 24 at 9:40 p.m. Snoad and Waggoner are scheduled to throw on Friday, with the men’s hammer slated for 10 a.m., and the women’s discus at 3 p.m.
