Wagner Named PL Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army senior Tom Wagner was named the Patriot League Track and Field Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Friday, earning the recognition for the first time in his highly decorated career. Wagner joins classmate Chris Jones on the Academic All-Patriot League Team as well. 

Less than a week removed from being named the Patriot League Outdoor Championship’s Field Athlete of the Meet, Wagner became the fifth Black Knight to earn the men’s outdoor academic honor and first since Andrew Ferrara was tabbed in 2009. In total, Army has brought home 10 men’s scholar-athlete certificates (five indoor, five outdoor) and four women’s (two indoor, two outdoor).

Wagner also joins fellow West Point classmates Zach Price and Brendan Buckley who were named the conference’s scholar-athletes of the year for baseball and lacrosse, respectively.

The Clinton, N.Y., native boasts a 3.549 grade point average while majoring in physics. He was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the fourth consecutive season.

At last weekend’s conference meet, Wagner won the high jump and triple jump while placing second in the long jump. The 28 points Wagner was responsible for earning at the meet was more than three teams combined for a whole. His top marks of the season in the high jump and triple jump list among the top 48 in the region, earning him a third career invite to the NCAA Championship First Round.

Jones was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the second time in his career after garnering the recognition following the 2011 indoor season. The middle-distance specialist carries a 3.736 GPA while majoring in chemistry.

At last weekend’s Patriot League Championships, Jones ran the anchor leg of the first-place 4x800-meter relay team which recorded the fifth-fastest time in Academy history. He then followed with a standout individual performance in the 800 meters, earning second place with a season-best time of 1:51.35.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Patriot League awards, a student athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
