WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army track and field will host rival Navy on Saturday at West Point’s Shea Stadium for the annual outdoor Star Meet. The Black Knights are looking to bounce back after February’s indoor sweep to the Midshipmen in Annapolis. The women’s meet will lead off the day, beginning at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s competition at 2:30 p.m.

The Series
Army and Navy men’s track and field have been facing off since 1923, with the Black Knights leading the all-time series, 69-67-2, including a 44-41 edge in outdoor competition. The women’s meet joined the schedule in 1987, with Army leading that series 26-25-1, including a 14-11 clip in outdoor competition.

2012 Indoor Star Meet
Navy swept the indoor Star Meets for the first time since 2008, with the men showing a 98-83 decision and the women’s meet scored at 112.5-68.5. The 44-point spread was the most for an indoor women’s meet since 2000, while the Midshipmen’s victory over the Black Knight men was the first for the graduating class of 2012.

2011 Outdoor
With rain pouring down and winds howling, the Army men collected their third consecutive season sweep of Navy with a 103-97 win in Annapolis, while the Midshipmen ladies mirrored that feat with a 129-73 decision over the visiting Black Knights.   The Black Knight men won 12 of 19 events, including a trio by then-senior Domonick Sylve, while the Midshipmen women captured first in 16 events, with two apiece going to Jessica Ridgway and Jess Palacio.

Not including relays, Army returns six men’s and one women’s individual champions from a year ago, while Navy shows five back for the men and 11 for the women.

Stacking Up This Season
Based on the top performances already recorded this outdoor season, the Army men boast better marks than Navy in 11 of the 19 events to be contended on Saturday, while the Navy women hold 13 of 19 superior finishes. On paper, the Army men have the edge in sprints, hurdles and jumps, while the Black Knight women maintain the lead in hurdles, as well as a handful of isolated events.

In the Patriot League’s performance list, the Army men boast six of the top marks this season, including a pair by senior co-captain Michael Hutchins (400m; long jump), while the women lead in three events. The Midshipmen also lead in six events for the men, while the women own eight of the top marks in 2012.

Coach’s Thoughts
“Unlike the indoor meet, we have everyone healthy right now,” said Army head coach Troy Engle. “This last week is all about the mental and psychological adjustment – we want to elicit that last 1-percent. Physically, there isn’t going to really be any change ... We’re more concerned with keeping their heads into it.

“We anticipate the competition to be fierce, so it depends on the team effort as opposed to 40 individuals,” Engle continued. “The Army-Navy meet is different than any other meet, there’s a different kind of competitive element. It’s important for all the right reasons.”
