WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Army track and field will look to avoid a second consecutive Star Meet season sweep on Saturday when the Black Knights travel to Navy for the annual outdoor dual. The Midshipmen won both meets during the indoor season in what was the closest pair of Army-Navy duals since the 2008 indoor campaign. The men’s competition will lead off the day beginning with the hammer throw at 10 a.m. With the exception of the hammer, the women’s competition will begin at 2:15 p.m. with a bevy of field events.

The indoor Star Meet at West Point was decided by a combined 18 points, with the Navy men prevailing 93-88, and the female Midshipmen capturing a 97-84 victory. Navy has won three consecutive Star Meets on the men’s side, including last season’s outdoor competition at Army’s Shea Stadium, with the Black Knights last tasting victory at Saturday’s venue – Navy’s Ingram Field in 2011.

On the women’s side, the Midshipmen have claimed victory in the last nine Star Meets, including four consecutive outdoor competitions. Army last defeated Navy at the 2008 outdoor Star Meet at West Point.

The outdoor Star Meets are sure to be competitive with 2013 outdoor performances used as a barometer. The two service academies have combined for 12 of the top men’s marks in the Patriot League this season and six of the women’s. The Black Knights own the top times on both the women’s and men’s side in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (Mark Castelli, Mary Prakel), while the Army men boast the top finishes in both hurdles distances with two-time reigning Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week Kyler Martin leading in the 110-meter hurdles and Chris Smith having the top time in the 400-meter hurdles.

Field events proved to be the difference in the indoor competition, but the Black Knights appear to be faring better in the outdoor variety, especially in the throws. Current Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week Nick Snoad has the conference’s top hammer throw this season, while Bonny Bradway and Jessica Waggoner have the top javelin and discus distances, respectively.

Unlike the indoor Star Meet, following the Navy outdoor dual Army’s regular season will continue. The Black Knights will host their final home meet of the season on April 13 with the Army Quad Meet. Army will host Binghamton, Colgate and Middlebury, with the possibility of Columbia being added. Events are scheduled to begin at noon at West Point’s Shea Stadium.
