CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army freshman sprinter Jose Santana earned the first M-F Athletic Male Rookie of the Week of the outdoor season Monday afternoon for his performance at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina. Santana earned the honor twice during his first indoor campaign.
Santana qualified for the IC4A Championships in two events. In the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, he clocked a time of 10.82 seconds, which not only bettered the standard, but also tied for 10th on the Black Knights’ all-time top 10 list. He took nearly two-tenths of a second off that time in the finals, crossing the line in fifth place at 10.63 seconds. His time in the finals tied for fifth on the Black Knights’ all-time ledger.
The Orlando, Fla., native was part of the Army 4x100-meter relay team that finished sixth with a time of 41.94 and qualified for IC4A competition. Santana, the reigning Patriot League Indoor Championship Rookie of the Meet, was also part of the quartet that finished fifth in the 4x200-meter relay.
The Black Knights’ next competition is set for March 27-29 at the Texas Relays. The trip to Austin will mark the final warm-up before hosting Navy in the annual Star Meet on April 5.
