WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army freshman Haley Winters was voted the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week on Monday following a standout performance at Saturday’s Harvard Challenge. Winters competed in three events in her third collegiate meet with two finishes ranking among the best in Academy history and one time that met the ECAC Championship-qualifying standard.
Winters finished third of eight in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.85 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in program history. The mark was the best by a Black Knight since 2009. She then followed with a fifth-place finish in the 200m (26.08) before teaming with sophomores Jennifer Comfort and Lisa Junta and senior Mary Prakel in the distance medley relay. The relay unit won the event with the third-fastest time in Academy history, 12:03.20, which also met ECAC standards. Winters ran the 400-meter leg of the race.
Winters is the Army women’s first Patriot League Rookie of the Week honoree this season. The Black Knights took home five indoor newcomer accolades a season ago as Winters’ relay partners Junta and Comfort combined for four certificates in 2012, while Katrina Donarski rounded out the honorees.
Comfort, who broke the Academy record in the 1,000-meter run on Saturday, and senior Kyler Martin who ran Army’s fifth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time, were named to the honorable mention list as well.
