WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second week in a row, Army track was well-represented in the Patriot League’s Weekly Awards release as sophomore Lisa Junta and senior Kevin Russell were tabbed the conference’s Track Athletes of the Week. Junta earned the honor for the second consecutive week, while Russell’s certificate is the first of his career. The Black Knights hosted a six-way meet at Gillis Field House on Saturday, with the men winning the team title and the women placing fifth.
Junta won the 5,000-meter run with the second-fastest time in Academy history, besting the second-place finisher by over 1:15 with her ECAC Championship-qualifying time of 17:03.33. The sophomore’s performance was similar to what earned her Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors last week, when she won the 3,000 meters with the third-fastest time in program history. Junta’s 5K time is the best in the Patriot League this season and ranks second among all ECAC qualifiers.
Russell qualified for the IC4A Championships in a pair of events on Saturday, beginning with the one-mile run. Russell finished first in a field of 21 with a personal-best time of 4:11.93 to punch his postseason ticket. The senior then followed in the 4x800-meter relay with a runner-up time of 7:49.46. The relay unit’s finish is the best in the Patriot League this season, while Russell’s mile mark lists second.
Junta is the Army’s first back-to-back winner of the Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honor, and she is the first Black Knight runner since All-American Domonick Sylve was awarded three consecutive men’s track certificates during the 2010 outdoor season.
