CENTRAL VALLEY, Pa. – Army track and field capped off a successful first weekend of the indoor season with a trio of Patriot League weekly honors on Monday. Senior Chris Jones was named Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Lisa Junta garnered Rookie of the Week accolades. Senior Tom Wagner earned an honorable mention nod.

Jones won a pair of events on Saturday at the Army-hosted Crowell Open, beginning with the 500-meter dash and followed with 1,000-meter run. Jones ran the 500m for the first time in his collegiate career, recording a 2012 Patriot League-best 1:04.62 to take first. The Blairsville, Ga., native won the 1,000m by crossing the line in 2:32.41, which lists fifth in the conference this season.

Junta, competing in her first collegiate track meet, captured the 3,000-meter run title by finishing in 10:13.32, beating out the second-place finisher by nearly nine seconds. Junta’s time ranks third in the Patriot League this season, while being the only freshman ranked in the top six.

Wagner, a four-time conference champion, won the high jump and triple jump while placing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles. The Clinton, N.Y., native captured the high jump crown with a mark of 2.04 meters to rank second in league, while his winning jump of 14.20m in the triple lists third among conference foes. Running the 60-meter hurdles for the first time in his collegiate career, Wagner finished in 8.38 seconds, a time which also ranks third in the Patriot League.

The men’s indoor Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week recognition is the first for the Black Knights since Domonick Sylve (USMA ’11) was recognized on Feb. 7, 2011, while the rookie recognition is the first for the women since Jan. 12, 2010, when McKenzie Majchrzak earned the certificate.

Army returns to competition Saturday when Lehigh, Monmouth, Columbia, Williams and Rider visit West Point’s Gillis Field House. The Black Knights will be pitted against the five schools in their first team-scoring meet of the season. Events are slated to being at 1 p.m.
