CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army track and field ushered in the 2013 season with a bang on Saturday and the successes were recognized by the Patriot League on Monday. Sophomore Lisa Junta and senior McKenzie Majchrzak were named the Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week and Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, while junior Christopher Smith earned the track recognition on the men’s side. The three conference certificates were the most the Black Knights earned in one voting period since Jan. 16, 2012, when cadet-athletes were also tabbed in three categories.

Junta, who was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times last indoor track season, earned her first Track Athlete of the Week honor after winning the 3,000-meter run at the Crowell Open at Gillis Field House on Saturday afternoon. Junta ran the third-fastest 3K time in Academy history with a time of 9:50.04, while her converted time of 9:45.02 bested ECAC-qualifying standards by over 13 seconds. Junta is Army’s first Women’s Track Athlete of the Week since Carissa Hauck was recognized on Jan. 12, 2010.

Majchrzak was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career as well, gathering weekly conference accolades for the first time since freshman year when she was named the Rookie of the Week five combined times between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Majchrzak also punched her postseason ticket for the fifth time in her career, eclipsing the high jump bar at 1.70 meters to earn second place in the event. The Manistee, Mich., native is the first Black Knight to earn weekly indoor field honors since pole vault specialist Kaci Clark was recognized on Feb. 14, 2011.

Smith rounded out the honorees by earning his first Track Athlete of the Week certificate. Smith, who was last spotlighted by the Patriot League on Feb. 2, 2011, as the top rookie of the week, finished second of 30 in the 500-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 1:05.72. The mark, which was converted to 1:04.72, met IC4A Championship-qualifying standards. Smith is Army’s first men’s indoor track weekly honoree since Christopher Jones earned the certificate on Jan. 9, 2012.

Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph was tabbed the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week while fellow Bison Michaela Read earns the Women’s Rookie of the Week certificate. Navy’s Jeremy Granderson rounded out the honorees with his Men’s Rookie of the Week nod.

The Black Knights will return to competition on Saturday when Army hosts a six-way meet at Gillis Field House. Events are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
