WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army swimming and diving teams return to Crandall Pool on Friday, Oct. 5, when the Black Knights host Patriot League newcomer Boston University and Vermont (women only) in a meet at 5 p.m.

Army is coming off of a second-place showing for the men and a fourth-place showing for the women at the 2013 Patriot League Championships in February. The men’s team fell behind academy rivals, Navy, who scored 995.5 points while Army followed up with 734 points. Navy also took the women’s title while the Black Knights picked up 542 points and a fourth-place finish. Senior Chris Nyugen took home the Diver of the Meet award while head coach, Mickey Wender was awarded Coach of the Meet.

Army will face some key losses this season to graduation this past May. Diver Chris Nuygen earned major points for the Black Knights off of both boards. Former co-captain freestyle swimmer Dan Foky, butterfly and individual medely swimmer Ayman Andrews, diver Chad Drake, diver Vinny Franchino and breaststroke and individual medely swimmer Carter Kelly complete the list of men’s team members who have been lost to graduation.

On the women’s team freestyle swimmer Juliette Wallerstein, diver and breaststroke swimmer Michelle Su and Megan Metts have all departed ways after graduation this past spring. Last year’s captain Lara Stouffer will also be departing from the team as last season marked her last year of eligibility.

Moving forward both of Army’s swimming and diving teams look forward to a successful 2013-14 campaign. As both teams finished in the top half of the conference in the championship meet last season, they look to improve those finishes when they cap the 2013-14 season late in February.

“Everyone associated with the Army Swimming and Diving family is very excited about our home/season opener tomorrow night,” said Wender. “In light of everything going on with our national government it is a privilege to have the opportunity to compete and do something we love to do- we are very lucky and excited.

“Our young team has been working very hard for the past seven weeks in and out of the pool and is eager to kick off the season. We're fortunate to have tremendous leadership from our upper-class and a very solid group of newcomers. We'll learn a lot about ourselves tomorrow night. Boston University and the University of Vermont are well-coached and established programs who I will know will bring out the best in us. It's going to be a fun and competitive atmosphere. I can't wait to get it started,” he continued.

Army men’s team brings back five All-Patriot League team members, including Will Viana, Zachary Woods, Sam Mo, Chris Szekely, and Richard Xue.

Team captains Brendan Lorton and Daniel Ruckman will help lead the Black Knights in the upcoming season.

With only four key losses for the women’s team, there will be multiple returners to compete in the 2013-14 season. All-Patriot League team members Natalie Beale, Grace Hamilton and Molly Mucciarone will McNeary will look to lead the sprint freestylers while Kristen Barta, Jen Clay, Kristina Muller, Shannon Rogers, Josie Antilla, Kate Kinley, Sam Allen and Ally Walz will also contribute in their respective events.

Seniors Breawna Davis, Rita Snyder and Danielle Ullman all scored points at the Patriot League Championship as juniors, and the trio of divers will continue to do big things for the women’s team.

Davis and Hamilton will lead as Army women’s co-captains for their final season.

With a combined 75-person roster, the Black Knights welcome 28 freshmen onto the team, including 17 men and 11 women.

Competition will begin at 5 p.m., with diving one hour prior, at Crandall Pool. Following this weekend’s meet the Black Knights will finish off their brief homestand by hosting an Alumni meet on Friday, Oct. 11, and Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 19.
