WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three members of the Army swimming and diving program were among the 20 Patriot League swimming and diving student-athletes to the 2014 Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced by conference officials on Monday.
Juniors Joon Mo Chung and William Viana were honored from the Army men’s team, while junior Kristen Barta is the only individual from the women’s team to represent the Black Knights.
This is the second year Chung has been recognized by the Patriot League for his efforts both in and out of the pool. The Novi, Mich., native racked up 19 points at the annual championship meet to earn 54th place among 109 competitors, after taking fifth-place with a time of 2:01.56 in the 200-yard backstroke. The junior swimmer also recorded a personal best time of 56.30 in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Patriot League meet. The Information Systems Engineering major shows an impressive 3.932 cumulative grade point average.
Viana piled up 30 points for Army at the Patriot League Championships for the 34th spot amongst competitors. The Stuggart, Germany native who placed fifth in the 400 individual medley (3:56.73), also had a hand in two Black Knight relay teams who placed in the top 10 at Leujene Hall. Army’s 800-yard freestyle and 400-medley relay teams both finished in third-place, with the 400 medley team breaking the academy record with a time of 3:17.81. Viana, whose major is Computer Science, boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.568.
Barta also earned recognition from the league for the second straight year. The Oconomowoc, Wis., native took 15th place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.08. She also swam on two scoring relays for the Black Knights at the conference meet, including the second-place academy record breaking 400-yard medley team and the seventh-place 800-yard freestyle team. Barta is a Law and Legal Studies major who shows an impressive 3.964 cumulative grade point average.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter of key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
