WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army swimming and diving teams got back on the right track Friday evening, sweeping a non-conference dual meet from Drexel at Crandall Pool. The Army men earned a 160-140 decision, while the Black Knight women coasted to a 182-112 victory.

The Army men (7-3) captured just seven of the 16 events, but their depth helped carry them to the win. The Black Knight women, meanwhile, took nine of the 16 events as they improve to 4-7 on the season.

"It was a good day for our team," said Army sixth-year head coach Mickey Wender. "We were much improved from a week ago, and I'm very pleased with the way we're progressing. I can see that we're making significant progress in a lot of different areas, and I feel good about where we're headed."

Freshman Will Viana won a pair of individual events in the pool to pace the Army men. Junior Ayman Andrews and sophomore Kenny Yacynych each had a hand in a pair of victories as well.

Viana began his productive evening by winning the 200-yard butterfly in a clocking of 1 minute, 54.80 seconds. He led a 1-2 Army finish in that event as freshman Spencer LeeMurakami placed runner-up with a time of 1:54.95. Viana won his second race of the night in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:54.82. Once again, Army placed first and second with senior Chuck Zhou finishing runner-up with a clocking of 1:55.64.

Andrews took gold in the 100-yard butterfly (50.16), while Yacynych won the 100-yard backstroke (52.71). Zhou chipped in his second runner-up showing of the meet in the 100 back, posting a time of 53.38.

Andrews and Yacynych began the night by teaming with juniors Carter Kelly and Bill McCarty to win the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:28.21.

Freshman Casey Woudenberg won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a clocking of 9:45.68. He edged fellow freshman Nic Laffosse, who placed runner-up with a time of 9:45.99.

Junior Chris Nguyen led a 1-2 Army finish off the three-meter board to pace the Black Knights' diving contingent. The reigning Patriot League Diver of the Week took gold with a score of 342.37, while freshman Josh Urnezis captured the silver with a final tally of 301.35. Nguyen also added a second-place showing off the one-meter board, piling up 264.82 markers.

Junior Alyssa Tran had a hand in three victories in the pool, and freshman Sam Allen swept the breaststroke events to lead the Army women.

Individually, Tran won the 50-yard freestyle (24.59) and 100-yard butterfly (57.96). She also started the meet by teaming with senior Paige Brink and sophomores Lara Stouffer and Grace Hamilton to capture the 400-yard medley relay (4:04.53).

Allen, meanwhile, cruised to wins in both breaststroke disciplines, winning both the 100 breast (1:09.72) and 200 breast (2:29.73).

Brink added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 53.68, while freshman Audrey Brown took gold in the 1,000 free (10:48.35). Brown led an Army sweep of the top-two spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle as fellow freshman Josie Antilla placed runner-up with a clocking of 10:53.52.

Army swept the diving events unopposed as Drexel does not field a women's diving team. Sophomore Danielle Ullman won the one-meter competition with a score of 197.76, while fellow sophomore Breawna Davis earned gold off the three-meter board (201.59).

Army returns to Crandall Pool on Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Black Knights host American, George Mason and Old Dominion in a quad-meet. The action is slated to get under way at 1 p.m.

Meet Notes: The Army men and women both improve to 2-0 all-time versus Drexel following today's sweep.
