Bret Lundgaard is in the midst of his third season as an assistant coach for the Army swimming and diving program. A 2008 University of Washington graduate, Lundgaard was a member of the Huskies' swimming and diving squad under current Army head coach Mickey Wender during his tenure in Seattle.
Lundgaard is the men's and women's recruiting director and an assistant swimming coach for the Black Knights. In his time at West Point, Lundgaard has been the primary distance freestyle and 400 individual medley coach. In addition, Lundgaard assists in creating and conducting the dry land and flexibility routines of all the athletes.
As recruiting coordinator, Lundgaard's efforts have helped Army swimming and diving sign the best male (2010) and female (2011) class to West Point in well over a decade, and it has shown as the team has improved its conference rank each year Lundgaard has been on staff. In dual meets, Lundgaard has helped the Army men's team earn their best dual meet record in over three decades as the 2010 team went 12-3, including its first win over Connecticut in over a decade and the 2011 team earned a 12-4 mark.
During the 2010-2011 campaign Lundgaard coached freshmen Brock Redondo to multiple Academy records including breaking the 18-year old school and plebe record in the 400 individual medley and the plebe record in the 500 freestyle. Brock's efforts at the 2011 Patriot League Championships earned him all-conference honors and he scored the team's most points at the conference championships. Days after the Patriot League Championships, Brock also earned his first individual conference championship as he won the 400 individual medley at the ECAC Championships.
A Las Vegas native, Lundgaard was an assistant coach for the Desert Storm Swim Team before arriving at Army, coaching Junior, Senior and Olympic Trial Qualifiers.
In 2008-09, Lundgaard was an assistant coach for Boulder City (Nev.) High School where he helped lead the squad to the 4A Regional Championship and a fourth-place finish at the state championships. Lundgaard also served as a psychosocial rehabilitative skills specialist, working with children with social, cognitive and emotional disorders.
Lundgaard graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and a minor in marketing from Washington. Voted team captain for his junior and senior campaigns, the butterfly and individual medley specialist was a four-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and also qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 butterfly.
A member of the school-record setting 200 free relay, he also finished his collegiate career ranked in the top three of the 100 and 200 butterfly lists as well as the 200 IM. He was voted "Most Inspirational" by his Husky teammates on three occasions during his stay in Seattle.
