WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Army's rifle team, fresh off a first-place finish at the President's Trophy Match last week, returns to the dual meet circuit with a pair of Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) matches this weekend.
The Black Knights, 2-1 in the GARC and overall, open a five-match home dual slate when they host North Carolina State on Friday, Nov. 11, 3 p.m., and Nebraska, Sunday, Nov. 13, 8:30 a.m., at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
Army's lone loss of the season was to GARC defending champion West Virginia on Oct. 22.
Fans can keep up with their teams this weekend through live stats that are available on Army's web site at www.goARMYsports.com.
Nebraska, who defeated the Black Knights 4619-4605 last year, is 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in the GARC. The Cornhuskers' season high 4626 was shot against Kentucky, which is lower than Army's marks in all three of its dual matches. The Black Knights' season low 4637 was fired against West Virginia.
Army's second-highest aggregate score of 4651 was recorded against Air Force, a team Nebraska fell to (4602-4570), in the NCAA four-man format last weekend (the President's Trophy Match counts five scores). The Black Knights' season-high 4663, one of the top scores in the country, was fired in the season opener vs. Memphis.
The Black Knights will be looking to post their first win over the Cornhuskers since a 4669-4584 decision at West Point in 2007-08. The Black Knights are unbeaten against North Carolina State since the Wolfpacks joined the conference in 2005-06.
At the President's Trophy Match, Will Mengon earned medalist honors in smallbore, and Kelly Buck and Richard Calvin were the high shooters in air as Army's rifle team captured the President's Trophy Match for the third straight year and sixth time over the last seven years in its last outing.
The Black Knights compiled a 5812 team aggregate in outpointing runner-up Air Force (5749) by 63 points. Navy finished third (5734) followed by Coast Guard. In the NCAA four-man scoring format, Army posted its second highest score of the season with a 4651.
Mengon set a personal best registering the highest mark of 586 in smallbore in leading a Black Knight sweep of the top five individual places. The Army junior broke his previous high of 582 set three times, the last in the Black Knights' dual-match win over Navy in 2011.
Buck was runner-up in that discipline with a 582 followed by Calvin (580), Michael Matthews (579) and Joseph Todaro (574) as the Black Knight combined for a 2901 composite.
In air rifle, Buck claimed medalist honors for the first time this season behind a season-high 587 in sharing that honor with Calvin as Army swept the first four spots. It is the second time this season that Calvin earned medalist honors following a first-place finish in the season opener versus Memphis.
Zachary Wells and Todaro tied for Army's second highest scores with respective 586s. It was a career-high for Todaro, breaking his mark of 582 set last year at this match. Matthews (576) and team captain Tommy Carr (575) rounded out Army's five-man composite as the Black Knights edged Air Force by a point (2911-2910) in the five-man team scoring.
Army puts the finishing touches on its fall slate next weekend hosting Texas Christian and Murray State, 9 a.m., at Tronsrue.
