Army's rifle team, idle since opening its season the first weekend in October, hosts Coast Guard Saturday morning 11 a.m. at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center for its lone home meet of the fall campaign.
The Black Knights (1-1, 1-1 GARC) defeated Ole Miss in their Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) season opener, 4640-4597, with Army earning medalist honors in both disciplines.
Senior All-American Michael Matthews' 584 led an Army sweep of the top three places in smallbore. Sophomore Alyssa Gestl earned runner-up honors and senior team captain and All-American Joseph Todaro earned the bronze with a 579 as the Black Knights compiled a 2304 smallbore composite.
Gestl and Zachary Wells tied for medalist honors in air rifle as both fired 585s with All-American Richard Calvin and Todaro a point behind (584) in tying for third place en route to a team score of 2336.
Memphis nipped Army by three points the next day, 4629-4626, outdueling the Black Knights by nine points in smallbore, 2302-2293,that carried the Tigers to the win after suffering a 2333-2327 defeat to Army in air rifle.
The Tigers earned medalist honors in both events with Calvin and Matthews finishing second in air rifle (588) and smallbore (579), respectively.
