WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army's rifle team, coming off a strong performance at the NRA Sectionals last weekend, takes on Great America Rifle Conference rival Navy Saturday, 8 a.m., at Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in the annual "Star" match.

The Black Knights, who moved up to No. 5 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, will be looking to extend their series win streak, which is at four, over their arch rivals who are ranked No. 13.

Army head coach Ron Wigger, who has been at the helm since 2001-02, is 7-1 against Navy over the last eight years as the Black Knights pulled ahead 41-32 in the all-time series that began in 1939.

Both Army and Navy competed at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range on the campus of the University of Sciences over the weekend. While Navy recorded a pair of dual wins firing against USP Friday and Saturday, Army did not compete against that field. Instead the Black Knights fired their NRA Sectional match separately, posting a score of 4642, which bested the Midshipmen's top mark (4626) over the weekend by 16 points.

With three All-Americans on its squad in seniors Richard Calvin, Michael Matthews and Joseph Todaro, Army's season high is a 4669 fired against West Virginia, currently ranked No. 1 in the country. The Black Knights' top marks in smallbore (vs. West Virginia) and air rifle (vs. No. 2 Kentucky) are 2325 and 2352, respectively. Individually, Todaro recorded a team-best 586 in smallbore and Calvin is the leader in air rifle with a 595.

Two of Navy's top team marks were also recorded against West Virginia behind a 4627 aggregate and 2332 mark in air rifle, while its season-best smallbore score of 2314 was recorded against USP. Individually, freshman Jodi Cull-Host is the team's leader in air rifle (586), and senior Steven Frazier recorded the top score of 584 in smallbore and is also among the top shooters in air rifle with a 585.

This is the second time that Army and Navy are meeting this year, having competed in the fall at the President's Trophy Match hosted by the Midshipmen. The Black Knights reclaimed the team title for the seventh time in the last nine years after edging defending champion Air Force, 5809-5800 (five-man composite) followed by Navy (5750) and Coast Guard (5510).

Army is 1-3 in the Great America Rifle Conference with its lone win over No. 12 Ole Miss (4640-4597) followed by losses to West Virginia (4695-4669), Kentucky (4697-4655) and No. 13 Memphis (4629-4626).

Navy, the newest member of the conference, is also 1-3 in the GARC. The Midshipmen fell to Kentucky (4693-4590), West Virginia (4678-4627) and No. 6 Nebraska (4631-4590), while their first GARC win this season was against No. 15 North Carolina State (4627-4596).

Following Saturday's meet, Army returns home for a pair of GARC matches against North Carolina State (Feb. 7) and Nebraska (Feb. 9).
