WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army rifle team heads to Philadelphia, Pa., Friday to compete at the NRA Sectionals hosted by the University of the Sciences at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range.

In the latest College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) weekly poll, which is based on the team's average of scores from matches at three different venues, the Black Knights moved up to No. 5 following a strong performance over the weekend.

Army's 4668 in Friday's win over Murray State keyed the team's higher ranking after starting off last week in eighth place.

Army shows an average of 4663.67 in trailing No. 1 Kentucky (4695.67), No. 2 Alaska (4691.33), No. 3 West Virginia (4680.67) and No. 4 Jacksonville State (4668.0) in rounding out the top five teams in the country. Kentucky, West Virginia and Army are members of the Great America Rifle Conference.

The Black Knights fell to West Virginia in the fall and to Kentucky on Sunday. Despite the loss to the Wildcats, Army posted a season-high 2352 in air rifle, while its top score of the season (4669) was recorded against the Mountaineers.

NRA All-Americans Richard Calvin and Michael Matthews finished first in air rifle and smallbore, respectively, in the win over Murray State. Calvin tied his career high with a 595 in air rifle and Matthews led smallbore with a 585. Calvin finished runner-up in air rifle with a 593 against Kentucky with senior classmate and All-American Joseph Todaro firing a career-high 590.

Calvin led Army in air rifle with a 591 at last year's NRA Sectionals where the Black Knights posted a 2342 mark in air rifle and 2286 smallbore score combining for a 4628 team composite.

Head coach Ron Wigger is looking for his team to equal or better last week's performance by posting top scores at the Sectionals, which are held throughout the country between January and February.

Army returns to the dual circuit when it takes on GARC rival Navy in the annual "Star" match on Feb. 1 in Annapolis, Md.
