COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Michael Matthews and Richard Calvin finished third individually in smallbore and air rifle, respectively, but it was not enough as host Air Force swept both disciples to capture the President's Trophy Match after outshooting runner-up Army, 5806-5790, in closing out the two-day invitational Sunday at the USAFA Rifle Range.

The Falcons snapped Army's three-year reign to capture the title for the first time since the inaugural year of the trophy in 1998-99. In the five-man scoring format, Air Force outpointed Army by nine points the first day in smallbore, 2880-2871, and by seven points in air rifle the next day for a 16-point margin with Navy and Coast Guard finishing third and fourth with scores of 5719 and 5316, respectively.

In the NCAA four-man format, the Black Knights and Falcons posted identical 2296s in smallbore, and both set season highs in air rifle with the Falcons' 2343 nipping Army's 2342 by a point in that discipline and the team scoring, 4639-4638.

Individually, Matthews, Joseph Todaro and Alyssa Gestl placed among the top six in smallbore the first day. Matthews earned the bronze with a 579, Todaro was fifth (576) with Gestl setting a season-high 575 to place sixth. Team captain William Mengon and Jacob Costa rounded out Army's scoring unit with marks of 574 and 567, respectively.

Calvin turned in Army's top mark of 588 in air rifle, which was just a point off Air Force medalists Kevyn Stinett and Mere Carpentie, to finish third.

Army's Zachary Wells posted a season-high 586 to place fourth with Mengon finishing seventh (585) followed by Matthews (583) and Gestl (577).

The Black Knights will be idle the rest of November and December as they prepare for exams and the holidays before, returning to the range in January.
