Rifle Team Places Fourth At GARC Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Richard Calvin placed fifth in the individual finals of air rifle as Army earned the bronze in that event and finished fourth overall Sunday afternoon at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships hosted by Ole Miss at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.

The seventh-ranked Black Knights' air rifle score of 2354 was three points higher than No. 4 Nebraska's, but the Huskers' 2314 smallbore score lifted them past Army, 4665-4653, in the battle for third place.

No. 1- ranked West Virginia shot a two-day total of 4700 points to win its fifth straight GARC title after outpointing runner-up and No. 3 Kentucky's 4672 by a 28-point margin.

No. 6 Memphis was fifth (4634), host Ole Miss took sixth (4625), No. 13 Navy seventh (4612) with No. 15 North Carolina State and No. 16 Akron finishing eighth and ninth with 4603 and 4590 scores, respectively.

It is the fourth straight year that Calvin has posted Army's top score in air rifle at the GARC Championships, while qualifying for the individual finals (top eight) for the third time. The NRA All-American's 593 in the open relay tied with West Virginia Maren Predger for third place with Calvin firing a 140.9 in the individual finals in finishing fifth for his highest showing at the GARC Championships. Predger shot a 206.7 in the individual finals in being crowned the champion.

Joining Calvin on Army's air rifle unit was Alyssa Gestl with a career-high 590, Olivia Nardone (586) and Michael Matthews (585). Gestl's score tied for 11th place, Nardone tied for 17th and Matthews tied for 21st among a field of 65 shooters.

Army will be idle for the next two weeks as it prepares for the NCAA Championships in Murray, Ky., March 14-15, in making their 11th straight appearance.
