HANOVER, N.H. - Taking the court for the first time in three months, the Army women's tennis team suffered a 15-3 loss at Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center. Two of Army's three points came in doubles action, while junior Jurelle Mendoza won a three-set thriller to notch Army's lone singles win as the teams played through an unconventional 18-point match during which each dual was worth a single point.
Dartmouth (3-0), which finished the 2008-09 season ranked 14th in the East Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) listing, won all but one singles match and took four of six doubles battles to notch the victory.
Mendoza highlighted Army's singles play, battling back after dropping the first set (6-3) to force a third set with a 7-5 win in the second. The Texas native outlasted Dartmouth junior Ashley Mitchell in a marathon 10-7 third set to capture the victory. Ten of the Big Green's 11 singles victories came via sweeps as Army junior Michael Tollerton pushed junior Ryan Reichel to three sets before succumbing in a 6-3 third frame.
Tollerton teamed with junior Robie Verano earlier in the day to collect one of Army's two doubles wins. The pair combined to lead Army with eight doubles wins in the fall and added one more to their resume on Saturday. Tollerton and Verano recorded an 8-5 win over Dartmouth's Jesse Adler and Julia Zak in the No. 2 slot. Playing together for the first time ever, freshman Erin Colton teamed with junior Annie Hang in tallying an 8-5 win over Dartmouth's Georgie Smyser and Sarah Leonard in the third flight. Three of the Black Knights' four losses came by three points or less.
Army wastes little time getting back to work as the Black Knights host four matches next weekend at Litchenberg Tennis Center. Army will square-off against Binghamton (9 a.m.) and Hofstra (5 p.m.) on Saturday before facing Seton Hall (9 a.m.) and Sacred Heart (5 p.m.) on Sunday.
