Box Score (Army 5, Binghamton 2)

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Tony Capozzi went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one run batted in and Tyler Anderegg fired four shutout innings of relief to earn the victory as Army ran its winning streak to a season-long five games with a 5-2 defeat of Binghamton, Tuesday afternoon at Doubleday Field.

Army (21-16) scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning when Ben Koenigsfeld doubled to left-center, moved to third base on a fielder’s choice and scored on the back end of a double-steal with teammate Kyle Fleming. The Black Knights stretched their lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Zach Price extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-out single to center field and Andy Ernesto laced an RBI double down the right-field line.

After Steve Cummings fired five scoreless innings to start the game, Binghamton (16-15) tied the score with two runs against Black Knight reliever Logan Lee in the sixth. Jim Calderone, Peter Bregartner and Kyle Klee singled top open the frame, the only three batters Lee would face. Anderegg was summoned from the bullpen and yielded a run-scoring single to Corey Taylor that delivered Bregartner, tying the score at 2-2. But with runners at first and second and no outs, Anderegg induced Dave Ciocchi to bounce into a double-play, then retired Joe Charron on a groundout to avert further damage.

Army regained the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth as Kevin McKague reached on an error and advanced to second on a bunt single by Fleming. Both runners moved into scoring position on an errant pickoff throw by Bearcat reliever Aaron Schuldt. J.P. Polchinski followed with a run-scoring groundout to shortstop and Capozzi registered a clutch, two-out single to right, scoring Fleming.

The Black Knights benefitted from another Binghamton fielding error in extending their lead to 5-2 in the eighth. Capozzi sliced a double down the right-field line, advanced to third on a groundout by J.T. Watkins and scored when Price’s sharp, two-out grounder deflected off the chest of Binghamton first baseman Dave Ciocchi for an error.

Anderegg (3-2), meanwhile, stifled the Bearcats over the final three frames, permitting just one Binghamton baserunner to reach scoring position during that span. He allowed four hits over his four scoreless innings.

McKagaue and Koenigsfeld smacked two hits apiece for the Black Knights, while Calderon, Bregartner, Klee and Jeff Abrams finished with two hits each for the Bearcats.

Army returns to Patriot League play this weekend, traveling to Lafayette for a key four game weekend series. The Black Knights need one victory to clinch a berth in next month’s Patriot League Tournament.
