Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Marc Krauss, Robert Maddox III and Hayden Johnston registered three hits and two runs scored apiece, while Brandon Besl and Bobby Martin drove in two runs each to lead Ohio University to a 10-4 victory over Army, Sunday morning at Wilson Field.
Kevin Mementowski tossed six shutout innings out of the Bobcat bullpen to garner the victory, allowing just four base hits while striking out one and not walking a batter. Bryce Butt notched his first save, firing three effective innings in relief for Ohio. He allowed one earned run on five hits, adding two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman right-hander Kyle Brueggermann (0-1) suffered the loss for the Black Knights, yielding four runs on six hits in four-plus innings. He recorded two strikeouts and one walk.
Army (1-2) jumped ahead with one run in the top of the first inning as leadoff hitter Andy Ernesto was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a walk by Ben Koenigsfeld and moved to third on a walk by Clint Moore that loaded the bases. Mementowski relieved Bobcat starter Brent Choban after just three batters and promptly induced Kevin McKague to rap into a run-scoring double-play. Polchinski flied out to left field to end the threat as the Black Knights managed just one run from the bases-loaded, no-out opportunity.
An RBI groundout by Ohio’s Zach Keen in the bottom of the second inning knotted the score at 1-1. The Bobcats took control by plating two runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and five in the sixth off Brueggemann and relievers Ben Gibbs and Manny Fernandez.
Martin’s two-run single up the middle accounted for the Bobcats’ runs in the fourth, while Johnston’s two-run homer to right-center field in the fifth extended Ohio’s lead to 5-1. A two-run single by Krauss and a two-run homer by Besl keyed the Bobcats’ five-run sixth that provided Ohio with an insurmountable 10-1 cushion.
The Black Knights pushed across three runs in the eighth to account for the final 10-4 margin, receiving run-scoring singles from Joey Henshaw and Zach Price.
Clint Moore, Henshaw and Kyle Fleming collected two hits each to pace Army’s nine-hit attack.
Army returns to action next weekend when it visits South Carolina-Upstate for a three-game series.
