Army Opens Season with 14-5 Blasting of Ohio University

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Clint Moore homered, tripled and drove in four runs, Ben Koenigsfeld went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and Matt Fouch allowed two unearned runs over six strong innings as Army opened its season with a 14-5 defeat of Ohio University, Saturday morning at Wilson Field.

Arrmy (1-0) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after three innings behind two-run home runs by Kyle Fleming and Kevin McKague. J.P. Polchinski worked a one-out walk and scored when Fleming drilled his first career home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the second off Bobcat starter Zach Ehlmer (0-1). Koenigsfeld ripped a leadoff double down the left-field line and McKague followed with a two-run shot to left-center field, staking Fouch (1-0) to the early four-run cushion.

Ohio (1-1) plated a pair of unearned runs off Fouch in the fifth inning as the Bobcats benefitted from a pair of Black Knight fielding errors and an RBI single by Gauntlett Eldemire. But Army answered quickly, stretching its lead back to 6-2, chasing Elmer with a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning.

Koenigsfeld began the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff single to right field and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Moore drew a walk and Koenigsfeld moved to third on a passed ball. After Polchinski drew a walk, Fleming’s run-scoring single down the left-field line delivered Henshaw for a 6-2 Army advantage.

The Black Knights stretched their lead to 8-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Tony Capozzi walked, advanced to second base on a sacrifice by Andy Ernesto and scored on a two-run triple to right-center field by Moore after an intentional walk to Koenigsfeld.

Army put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Koenigsfeld and a two-run home run to left-center field by Moore, extending Army’s lead to 11-2.

Ohio scored a run off Army reliever Ryan Davis in the top of the eighth inning before Army stretched its margin to 14-3 with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the stanza. A run-scoring single by Cody Shorter, an RBI grounder by Capozzi and a sacrifice fly by Ernesto highlighted the inning. Ohio closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth on a two-out, two-run home run by Marc Krausse.

Fleming went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high three runs batted in to join Moore and Koenigsfeld in pacing Army’s 12-hit attack. Fouch (1-0) permitted just three base hits (all singles), while striking out five and not walking a batter. Tyler Anderegg fired one inning of scoreless relief before giving way to Davis to start the eighth.

Black Knight Blog: The victory marked only the second time in 14 years that Army has won its season opener ... the Black Knights defeated Sam Houston State in 2007 ...
