WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men's tennis team officially opened the 2010 campaign at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday, as the Black Knights hosted Binghamton, Marist, and Monmouth for the Army Invitational.
In the non team-scoring event, freshman Gary Kushnirovich went undefeated on the weekend, earning a pair of wins in both singles and doubles play. Against Marist, the Brooklyn native paired with classmate Rashad Shelton for a 9-8 (7-1) win at No. 1 doubles, and posted a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 10-3 effort in his win at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Donald Van Velzer, who also picked up a doubles win against Binghamton, earned Army's second singles win against the Red Foxes. He finished the weekend at a combined 3-1.
Seniors Chris Albornoz and John Lucero, who were unbeaten in their second doubles matches against Marist and Binghamton (8-6 and 8-2), also each earned a win in solo action against Monmouth, where the Black Knights won five of the six singles matchups. Army also won two of the three doubles parings against the Hawks.
Alex Holland earned his lone singles victory (1-0) of the weekend against Binghamton in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, with the duos of Kushnirovich/Shelton, Albornoz/Lucero, and Holland/Van Velzer sweeping the doubles matches for Army.
Army will begin the dual match portion of the season by hosting Fairfield, Dartmouth, and Binghamton at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively.
