WASHINGTON, D.C. - Army needs a win over arch-rival Navy on Saturday to qualify for its first postseason bowl in more than a decade. Should the Black Knights make their first trip to the postseason, a familiar opponent will be waiting for them.
The EagleBank Bowl announced Sunday night that it had reached an agreement with Temple to face Army in the second edition of its postseason game, should the Black Knights become bowl eligible on Saturday. The Black Knights moved to within one victory of earning their first postseason bowl bid since 1996 with their 17-13 defeat of North Texas on Nov. 21.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Rich Ellerson, Army carries a 5-6 record into the 110th Army-Navy Classic, with the Black Knights already owning their highest victory total since 1996.
Army and Temple squared off for just the seventh time earlier this season at Lincoln Financial Field with the Owls prevailing 27-13. In that Oct. 17 contest, Temple scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to break open a 13-13 tie and score its second straight win over the Black Knights.
The Owls needed to move the ball only 25 yards to score their final two touchdowns. They stopped the Black Knights on a 4th-and-1 from the Army 24-yard line and scored the go-ahead touchdown three plays later. Temple put the game out of reach after recovering an Army fumble at the 1-yard line and scoring on the next play.
Josh McNary established Army records for quarterback sacks on the single game, single season and career levels in the loss as he recorded an Academy record for sacks in the setback.
It marked the third year in a row that the teams have met with Amy holding a slim 4-3 edge in the al-time series.
The Black Knights sport one of the nation's stingiest defenses, allowing just 309.9 yards and 22.4 points per game to rank 17th and 40th nationally in those respective categories. McNary heads Army's stop unit, ranking second nationally in tackles for loss (2.05) and third in quarterback sacks (1.14).
Temple received an at-large invitation to the EagleBank Bowl and will be playing in their first bowl game in 30 years. The Owls have experienced a football resurgence under fourth-year head coach Al Golden, going 9-3 this season and tying for first-place in the Mid-American Conference.
The second EagleBank Bowl will be held at RFK Stadium in Washington on Dec. 29. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the Army Ticket Office, by phone at 1-877-TIX-ARMY or online at www.goARMYsports.com.
