WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army and Rutgers will compete in the first college football game between Football Bowl Subdivision members at the New Meadowlands Stadium, it was announced today by Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson, Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti and New Meadowlands Stadium Company President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Lamping.

The Black Knights will square off against the Black Knights on Oct. 16, 2010, in what will be the 10th matchup between the teams in East Rutherford, N.J., and the first at the new home of the National Football League's New York Giants and New York Jets.

"This is a great opportunity for West Point and the Army football program," said Anderson. "We have a long history of playing games at Giants Stadium and look forward to continuing that tradition in the New Meadowlands Stadium in the future. We couldn't be more excited to have the privilege of participating in the first Football Bowl Subdivision game at what promises to be a state-of-the-art facility."

Army has played at the Meadowlands 17 times previously, but not since 2002. The Black Knights have battled the Scarlet Knights on nine occasions, with the last Giants Stadium pairing between the clubs dating back to a 42-21 Army win in 1996.  Four Army-Navy football classics have been contested at Giants Stadium, with the Black Knights opposing Notre Dame in the Meadowlands on three occasions and Pittsburgh once.

Currently in the final stages of construction, New Meadowlands Stadium will seat 82,500 fans, including 9,500 club seats and 222 luxury suites. It will be the third-largest stadium in the National Football League. Inside the stadium, four 40-by-130-foot High Definition video replay boards will hang from each corner of the upper deck. Outside the stadium, fans will be treated to a 350,000-square-foot outdoor plaza filled with fan-centric activities and pregame entertainment zones. A signature amenity of the stadium will be the brand new rail line that will drop off passengers less than 100 feet from the stadium - the total trip from New York's Penn Station will take less than 20 minutes.

The new stadium will have wider concourses and more HD square footage than any other stadium in North America.

With Thursday's announcement, Army will assume a historical role at two of the nation's premier new athletics venues next season. Officials from the world champion New York Yankees, Army and Notre Dame announced this summer that the Black Knights and Fighting Irish will also participate in the first college football game to be played in the new Yankee Stadium on Nov. 20, 2010.
