WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army amassed 472 rushing yards, and eight different Black Knights found the end zone as the Army sprint football team dismantled Princeton, 54-9, in the Collegiate Sprint Football League opener for both schools Friday evening in front of 450 spectators at West Point’s Shea Stadium.
Army (2-1, 1-0 CSFL) totaled 212 yards rushing in the first quarter as the Black Knights raced out to a 33-0 lead after the initial 15 minutes.
The Black Knights’ barrage began when Robert Miner scampered 23 yards to pay dirt putting Army on top, 7-0, at the 11:04 mark. Less than two minutes later, Stephen Lewis broke off a 17-yard run giving Army a 13-0 advantage. James Antonides, Tom Russell and Joe Kendall each added short touchdown runs later in the quarter to provide Army its healthy cushion going into the second quarter.
Princeton (0-3, 0-1 CSFL) got on the board late in the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal, and Army took a 33-3 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Scott Rupnow exploded for a 43-yard touchdown run, while Ricky Lentz added a three-yard touchdown burst. Miles Grooms closed out Army’s scoring with an electrifying 57-yard touchdown run around the right side and down the sideline.
Grooms led Army’s rushing attack with 77 yards on seven carries. Lentz added 66 yards on 12 attempts, while Rupnow chipped in 65 yards on four totes.
Princeton quarterback Alex Kandabarow led the Tiger attack, completing 25 of 59 pass attempts for 273 yards and a touchdown to Lon Johnson. Johnson finished with 12 receptions for 141 yards.
Nate Drake led the Black Knights’ defense with 10 tackles, while Charles Ratcliff, Tim Ashcraft and Doug Huddleston each collected their first interception of the season.
With the victory, Army extends its unbeaten streak versus Princeton to 27 straight games, outgaining the Tigers, 474-284. Army forced five Princeton turnovers and controlled the clock for more than 35 minutes. The Black Knights now lead the all-time series versus the Tigers, 48-3-2.
Army returns to action Oct. 14 when the Black Knights trek to the Philadelphia, Pa., to take on Pennsylvania in a key CSFL clash.
