WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army sophomore Bill Henderson garnered his second-straight Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week honor, Monday. Henderson was instrumental in the Black Knights’ hard-fought 9-6 road victory over Rutgers on Saturday in the squad’s lone game of the week.
A native of Tully, N.Y., Henderson and the Black Knight defense clamped down on the Scarlet Knights in the decisive second half, including a third quarter where Army outscored their hosts, 3-1, to take a three-goal lead into the fourth.
Henderson and the Black Knights also held Rutgers’ leading scorer Kory Kelly, who entered the game with 12 goals in his first four games, scoreless on seven shots during the game. Henderson was also credited with four ground-ball pickups during the afternoon.
Henderson was also recognized as the league’s top defender last week after holding three-time All-America Zach Greer of Bryant, who is the NCAA’s all-time leading goal scorer, to one goal and three shots on goal in a win over the Bulldogs as well as for his performance in the Black Knights’ victory over service-academy rival Air Force.
Army is ranked second in the Patriot League with an 8.17 goals against average heading into its conference opener opposite visiting Lehigh on Tuesday (March 17) at 7:00 p.m. at Michie Stadium.
