BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army junior attackman Jason Peyer scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the #14/17 Black Knights to a 4-3 victory over Lehigh in their Patriot League opener, Wednesday.
Army (4-2, 1-0 Patriot League) senior goalkeeper Adam Fullerton was credited with 11 saves, including one as time expired, for his fifth double-digits save performance of the season. Freshman midfielder Rob McCallion was also credited with a goal and an assist, while senior Paul Wigdzinski added two assists for the Black Knights.
A low scoring first half saw Lehigh leading, 2-1 after the first 30 minutes. Junior midfielder Ales Rhoads got Army on the board first from close range after a feed from behind the cage from freshman Jeremy Boltus at 11:38 of the first quarter.
Lehigh would even the score with 3:31 remaining in the first as Max Dahlem spun off an Army defender and scored from seven yards out for the 1-1 first quarter deadlock.
The Mountain Hawks added a man-up goal with 46 seconds to play in the half as Dahlem fed Matt Diehl to make the score 2-1 after 30 minutes.
McCallion accounted for the only scoring of the third quarter after taking a pass from Wigdzinski and converting from eight-yards out to knot the game up, 2-2, at 13:27.
Peyer’s first goal came off an assist from McCallion at 12:45 of the fourth quarter after a Lehigh slashing penalty put the Mountain Hawks man-down. Peyer cashed in his second goal off a Widgzinski feed at 6:53 to give the Black Knights their largest lead of the game, 4-2.
After a delay of game penalty on Army, Stumpf added a man-up goal with 1:51 remaining to close the Army lead to one, 4-3. Army was able to run out the final minutes of the game to improve to 18-2 all-time against the Mountain Hawks (4-4, 1-1 Patriot League).
Army continues its Patriot League schedule this Saturday, hosting Holy Cross at Michie Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
