EASTON, Pa. – Arrmy senior attackman Pat Fullerton and junior attackman Brooks Korvin each notched two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Rob McCallion added a goal and two assists to lead the No. 8/9 Black Knights to a 12-4 victory at Lafayette, Tuesday night.
Army improved its record to 9-3 this season, including a 5-1 Patriot League mark that clinched a share of its first regular season conference championship since being named co-champions with Bucknell in 2003.
Army awaits the outcome of Saturday’s game between Colgate and Bucknell. If Bucknell wins, it will be the top seed and host the Patriot League Tournament on Friday and Sunday, April 24 and 26. If Colgate wins, Army will be the top seed and host the tournament.
Senior attackman Alex Morse netted an unassisted tally with an eight-yard shot from the left side to start things off at 10:15, before Korvin added an unassisted tally at 9:17 to give Army a 2-0 first quarter advantage. Lafayette’s Cesar Munoz took the ball off the ensuing faceoff right into the Army zone and scored six seconds later as the score was 2-1 after the first quarter of play.
Sophomore attackman Tyler Oates started the second quarter off with a man-up goal off McCallion’s first assist, before Lafayette answered at the 13:01 mark. The Black Knights would finish the half with three unanswered goals to forge a 6-2 halftime lead. Senior midfielder Justin Bokmeyer’s 10-yard bouncer found the net at 4:58, before Korvin fed freshman attackman Pat Arlantico after a Leopard turnover at 3:22. Korvin would finish the run with 29 seconds left in the half to stake Army to the four-goal lead.
Lafayette would score the first goal of the second half with 8:22 on the third quarter clock, but the Black Knights would break the game open with another 3-0 run. Fullerton potted a man-up goal at 7:31 off a feed from McCallion, before Fullerton returned McCallion the favor at 5:10. Senior defenseman Craig Massie faked a behind-the-back pass and beat a Lafayette defender for his second goal of the season to give Army the sixth-goal edge at 4:53.
Lafayette scored its final goal of the game at 1:27 of the third to make it a 9-4 game going into the final quarter, before three unanswered Black Knight tallies put the game out of reach. Bokmeyer fed Oates at 9:18, before sophomore midfielder Andrew Maisano scored unassisted with 5:22 on the clock. Fullerton would finish things off with 12 seconds remaining off a feed from senior attackaman J.P. Keneally for the 12-4 final.
Black Knight senior captain Adam Fullerton registered another solid performance in goal, making nine saves in 56:55 of work.
GAME NOTES: Army senior Alex Morse led Army onto the field before the game, toting the American Flag ... the Black Knights improved to 27-0 all-time versus Lafayette ... nine different Army players scored goals while 12 notched at least one point ... the Black Knights moved up nine spots to No. 8 in this week’s USILA coaches poll, while moving up four spots to No. 9 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll ... Army will take on Duke this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in a game to be played at Manhasset High School on Long Island. The game will be played in honor of former Duke lacrosse player and Army Ranger Jimmy Regan, who was killed in Iraq in 2007.
