DURHAM, N.C. – Three different players had at least three points as No. 3 Duke showed its offensive prowess with an 11-5 victory over Army, Saturday afternoon in non-conference lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke entered the game with one of the top offenses in the country and showcased it to improve to 11-2. Duke is unbeaten at 3-0 in conference play and will host the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament next weekend.
Zach Greer, a junior who is fifth in the county averaging 4.25 points per game, netted five goals while Matt Danowski, a senior who is second in the nation with 4.42 points per game, had two goals and an assist. Peter Lamade, a senior middie, had two goals and an assist to help spoil Army’s first game in Durham, N.C.
Brooks Korvin scored twice for Army, which fell to 6-6, while Paul Wigdzinski had a goal and assist. Jason Peyer and Ryan Chase also scored goals while Justin Bokmeyer had an assist.
Army goalie Adam Fullerton made 13 saves and Eddie Clark had three on 41 shots. Duke’s Dan Loftus had nine saves on 31 shots.
Korvin opened the scoring two minutes into the game. Fullerton made a save, after Duke won the face-off, and the Black Knights had possession. After a timeout, Korvin shook loose from his defender and scored from eight feet out for an early 1-0 lead. It was Korvin’s team-leading 15th goal of the season.
Greer tied the game three minutes later when he knocked home a rebound at the 10:44 mark of the first period.
Danowski put Duke ahead when he bounced a shot in for a 2-1 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter and Max Quinzani scored off a Michael Ward assist 30 seconds later to make it 3-1.
Peyer cut the deficit to one with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter when he blasted in a high shot, off a pass from Wigdzinski. It was Peyer’s 11th score of the season.
Duke went back by two goals early in the second quarter when Lamade scored an unassisted tally to make it 4-2.
The Blue Devils made it 5-2 when Danowski scored a man-up goal off a Lamade feed at the 7:37 mark.
Greer scored his second of the game, a transition goal off a Danowski pass, for a 6-2 Duke lead with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Army got back within three goals with 9:29 left when Wigdzinski bounced in a shot to make it 6-3.
A minute later, Duke increased its lead to four on a score from Quinzani who found an empty net when Fullerton came out of the crease to scoop up a loose ball and start a clear attempt.
Greer made it 8-3 with 6:55 left in the third quarter with his third goal of the game. Greer’s fourth goal was early in the fourth quarter when he intercepted a pass near midfield and drove in for a score to make it 9-3 with 13 minutes left in the contest.
The Black Knight’s came back four minutes later when Korvin scored his second goal of the game, off of a Bokmeyer pass, to cut it to 9-4 with eight minutes remaining.
Lamade put Duke back ahead by five with an unassisted score at the 5:43 mark to make it 10-4.
Greer capped his afternoon with his fifth goal with 4:41 left in the game.
Chase scored his 10th goal of the season with 90 seconds remaining for the final scoring.
Army will play Service Academy rival Navy Friday at 4 p.m. in Annapolis, Md., in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Army is the No. 4 seed and will play top-seed Navy. Colgate and Bucknell will play in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. The championship game is Sunday at noon and will be televised live on College Sports Television.
Game Notes: The Atlantic Coast Conference flags surrounding Koskinen Stadium were at half-mast following the Virginia Tech tragedy ... Army head coach Joe Alberici was a nine-year assistant at Duke when the team went to the NCAA Tournament seven times, including a trip to the national finals, and complied a 96-47 record ... Alberici and team captains Ryan Chase and Eddie Clark presented a cadet sword to the family of Jimmy Regan prior to the game. Regan was a four-year lacrosse player at Duke who was killed while serving his country in the Army. Duke captains Matt Danowski and Ed Douglas presented the family with a framed jersey ... Brooks Korvin has a point all 12 games ... this was Army’s first game on grass ... Duke was Army’s third top-five opponent of the season. Army beat Syracuse and lost to Cornell ... Army leads the series with Duke 10-3.
