HAMILTON, N.Y.
– Brandon Corp scored four goals and had an assist as Colgate beat Army, 9-7, Saturday afternoon in a Patriot League lacrosse game at Tyler’s Field.Army led twice in the game at 6-5 and 7-6 but fell to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. Colgate improved to 5-4 and 2-1.
Seven different players scored goals for the Black Knights but Colgate was able to snap a three-game losing streak to Army thanks to Corp’s career-best five-point day.
Justin Bokmeyer had a goal and two assists for Army while Kevin LoRusso, Hunter Wakeland, Paul Wigdzinski, Brooks Korvin, Alex Rhoads and Zach Jansen also scored. Adam Hansinger had an assist for his first career point while it was Jansen’s first career point as well.
Colgate held a 31-30 advantage in shots on goal and held a 22-15 advantage in ground balls.
Army goalie Adam Fullerton had three saves while Colgate’s Tim Harrington had eight.
Colgate jumped out to the early lead when Matt Lalli scored off a Corp assist in a man-up opportunity. It was Colgate’s 20th goal in 29 man-up opportunities.
LoRusso tied the game with six minutes left in the first quarter. After Colgate turned the ball over in its own zone, Army took a timeout. Following the timeout, LoRusso shook loose from one defender and knocked home his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Bokmeyer scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season to put Army ahead 2-1. Fullerton made a great point-blank save to give the Black Knights possession and Bokmeyer took advantage with a well-placed shot.
Colgate tied the game two minutes later when Corp went low to knot the contest at two with 11:21 left in the second quarter.
Wakeland answered to put Army back ahead at the 7:11 mark when he went high, off a Bokmeyer pass, to make it 3-2. It was Wakeland’s fourth goal of the season and Bokmeyer’s team-best sixth assist.
Colgate tied the game for the third time with six minutes left in the second quarter when Brendan Hurley scored his 17th goal of the season.
The Raiders went ahead for the second time with a second man-up goal, this time by Nick Monastero for a 4-3 advantage.
Colgate scored its third man-up goal early in the third quarter to increase its lead to 5-3. Corp scored his second off an assist from Lalli.
Wigdzinski cut the deficit in half seconds later thanks to Hansinger’s hard work. Hansinger battled for a loose ball, took it into the offensive zone and dished it to Wigdzinski who buried the shot. It was Wigdzinski’s fifth goal of the season and Hansinger’s first career point.
Korvin shook his defender and tied the game at the 7:52 mark with his 10th goal of the season, off a second assist from Bokmeyer, forcing a Colgate timeout with the scoreboard showing 5s.
Rhoads scored his second goal of the season to give Army its first lead of the game at the 6:35 mark. Rhoads used a spin move to beat his defender and then buried a shot in the back of the net for a 6-5 lead.
The Raiders tied the game with 12 minutes remaining when Corp scooped up a loose ball in front of the net and scored his third goal of the season.
Jansen also scored his first career point and it was a big one that gave Army a 7-6 lead. Jansen hustled for a loose ball, scooped it up short of the circle and went the distance for his first goal with 9:30 remaining in the game.
Lalli scored his second goal with 7:38 left in the contest to once again tie the game, this time at 7.
Colgate went ahead following a timeout when Corp scored his fourth goal of the season at the 5:51 mark.
Will Planer scored an unassisted goal for a two-goal Colgate lead. Planers goal was of the empty-net variety with Fullerton double-teaming and providing defensive supprt.
Army will host Patriot League rival Bucknell, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Michie Stadium. The senior members of the team will be honored prior to the contest.
